Excel: Excellence for English Learners
Shelton Public Schools and UCLA Center X have partnered through a 5 year grant called Project ExcEL. The purpose of this grant is, in part, to provide better opportunities for students and families who are English learners in school and in the community. Elizabeth Shelton’s ExcEL team includes 13 staff members who meet on a bimonthly basis to learn about language acquisition and classroom strategies as well as brainstorm and implement ideas that will enhance the school experience for ELs. Currently, the team is working on using language progressions to better understand and improve student writing, purchase more multicultural literature and resources for classroom and support service work and include multicultural lessons into classroom instruction.
